It’s empowering to see one of the most prestigious woman in Australia –Julie Bishop – who says she is not a feminist – making public declarations about the routine daily sexism in conversations with women.
Her account of being the only woman in the Abbott cabinet among eighteen men is consistent with traditional feminist research. In the 19th century, the magazine PUNCH published the cartoon which exposed the extent to which women had their ideas and contributions ignored – and that they were very quickly taken up and ownership was claimed by men.
Ms Bishop quotes the obvious; further interrogation of the men would reveal at first that they didn’t hear her say it.
If she could ‘prove’ (record on phone) their major defence would be that when they said it – it meant something different.
As indeed it does for a man’s word counts for more than that of a woman!
