UConn women’s basketball freshman Blanca Quiñonez has quickly become one of the most exciting young players in college basketball. At just 19 years old, the Ecuadorian forward has already built an impressive basketball journey that began far from the United States.

From leaving home as a teenager to play in Europe to now starring for the UConn Huskies, Quiñonez’s story combines family support, international experience and strong performances on the court.

    Early Life and Background

Blanca Quiñonez was born on August 3, 2006, in Milagro, Ecuador. She first started playing basketball at the age of five after attending a summer sports camp with her twin brother and older brother.

Her talent quickly developed, and by the time she was 13 years old, she made a bold decision to leave home and pursue basketball opportunities in Europe. She moved to Italy, where she joined a club basketball program and continued developing her game.

Two years later, Quiñonez made her professional debut with Magnolia Campobasso in Italy’s Serie A1 league, gaining valuable experience before entering college basketball.

    Journey to UConn

Quiñonez opened herself to college recruitment in April 2024 after watching the NCAA Women’s Final Four and seeing the growing impact of women’s basketball in the United States.

Interest from several top Division I programs followed quickly. In October 2024, she committed to the University of Connecticut without even visiting the campus.

Her commitment also marked a historic moment for the program, as she became the first player from South America to join UConn women’s basketball.

    Freshman Season Performance

During her freshman season with the Huskies, Quiñonez has played an important role coming off the bench while providing scoring and energy.

She averaged 10.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while shooting just under 40 percent from three-point range. Her performance earned her recognition as both the Big East Freshman of the Year and Sixth Woman of the Year.

In the postseason, her performances improved even further as she became more confident and comfortable on the court.

    Family Background

Despite living far from home for several years, Quiñonez remains very close to her family in Ecuador. She often credits them as the foundation of her career and personal development.

Her father Guillermo worked long hours to support the family and help his children pursue their dreams. Her mother Fabiola, a former basketball player, introduced Blanca to the sport when she was young.
