Michigan Wolverines fans received an important injury update ahead of the biggest game of the season. Star forward Yaxel Lendeborg, who suffered a knee and ankle injury during the Final Four matchup against Arizona, is expected to play in the national championship game against the UConn Huskies.

Michigan defeated Arizona 91–73 in the Final Four, but the victory came with concern after Lendeborg was forced to leave the game early. With the NCAA title on the line, his availability has become one of the biggest talking points before Monday night’s championship clash at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Injury Update: Yaxel Lendeborg Expected to Play

Michigan’s medical staff provided positive news after evaluating Lendeborg’s injuries. The senior forward suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee along with an ankle sprain during the first half of the Arizona game. Medical tests later confirmed the injuries were considered low-grade.

An MRI conducted the following morning returned clear results. Team trainers also reported minimal swelling in the ankle and described the knee sprain as mild.

Lendeborg himself confirmed that he plans to take the court for Michigan in the national championship.

Although he is expected to play, he may not be fully healthy. The injuries could still affect his mobility, but the Wolverines believe his presence on the floor will make a major difference against UConn.

How the Injury Happened in the Final Four

The injury occurred during the first half of Michigan’s semifinal victory against Arizona. Lendeborg attempted a dunk in traffic and landed awkwardly after stepping on an opponent’s foot.

He immediately felt pain in both his knee and ankle and left the court with 8:51 remaining in the first half. The Michigan forward did not return before halftime.

However, he re-entered the game in the second half wearing a knee brace and finished the night with 14 minutes of playing time.

Even though he appeared limited, his return helped stabilize Michigan as the Wolverines closed out a convincing win to advance to the championship game.

    Yaxel Lendeborg’s Importance to Michigan

Lendeborg has been one of Michigan’s most important players throughout the 2025-26 season. The 6-foot-9 forward transferred from UAB and quickly became a key leader for the Wolverines.

His ability to score efficiently, rebound, and defend multiple positions has been a major reason behind Michigan’s successful run to the NCAA championship game.

What Lendeborg’s Availability Means for Michigan

Even if he plays at less than full strength, Lendeborg’s presence remains critical for Michigan.

He provides scoring from multiple areas of the floor, rebounds effectively, and adds defensive length that helps the Wolverines control the tempo of the game.

Michigan’s fast-paced offensive system works best when he is active in transition and able to stretch the floor with outside shooting. His versatility also allows the Wolverines to match up better against UConn’s frontcourt.

With the national championship on the line, Michigan will rely on whatever version of Lendeborg is available.

Final Outlook Before the Championship Game

Michigan enters the title game with momentum after its dominant Final Four victory. The positive injury update surrounding Yaxel Lendeborg has added further confidence ahead of the clash with UConn.

While the senior forward may not be fully healthy, he is expected to suit up and contribute in what will be the final collegiate game of his career.

For Michigan, having its star forward available could play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the 2026 NCAA national championship.
