The Indian cricket team, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir, faced strong criticism after the first ODI against New Zealand. The reason was the decision to send an injured Washington Sundar out to bat during a tense run chase.

Even though India won the match, many former players and fans felt the decision was risky and unfair to the player.

What Happened in the 1st ODI?

    • India was chasing 301 runs in Vadodara
    • Washington Sundar was already injured
    • Despite the injury, he came out to bat
    • He scored 7 runs from 7 balls and remained not out
    • KL Rahul finished the match for India

Soon after the match, Sundar was ruled out of the rest of the series and replaced by Ayush Badoni.

    Mohammad Kaif Questions Team Management

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif openly criticized the team management. He pointed out that the rules seemed different for different players.

Kaif reminded everyone of how Shubman Gill was handled during his injury in a past Test match.

Kaif said Gill was fully protected so that his injury would not get worse. But Sundar was not given the same care.

    Why Was the Decision Risky?

    According to Kaif:

    • Sundar could not run properly
    • He struggled to take double runs
    • His injury could have worsened
    • A short injury (7–10 days) could turn into a long absence (20–30 days)

Even though the required run rate was manageable, Kaif felt there were safer options.

    Other Batting Options Were Available

Kaif suggested that India could have sent other players instead, such as:

    • Kuldeep Yadav
    • Mohammed Siraj
    • Prasidh Krishna

These players could have handled the situation without risking an injured all-rounder.

India won the match, but many believe the decision could have serious long-term effects on Washington Sundar’s fitness and career. Mohammad Kaif clearly stated that injured players should only be used when absolutely necessary, especially at the very end of a match.

The incident has raised an important question:
Should all players be treated equally when it comes to injury management?

This debate is likely to continue as India moves forward in the series.
